Company owned lists are direct mailing lists that you create on your own. The lists could be created from people who visit your website and make purchases. This list is much more reliable but may require much research to put the list together. If most of the customers have ordered  from you before, it is like they will order again.

Response lists are rented direct mailing lists. The lists are mostly based on purchasing behavior or response behavior. These types of lists are from sources such as catalog or magazine subscribers. Many of the people who respond those types of sources are more likely to respond to you. Response lists are more like targeted lists and there is no effort on your part to put the list together. You can just purchase the list and download it directly from the website.

Many direct mailing lists can be created from public records such as phone book directories, census data, and court documents. These types of list are know as compiled lists and will contain much information about the consumer. The compiled list change quite often, so you will have to research regularly.

The mailing list should mean something. it should not represent only a list of names and addresses thrown together. You may benefit a little but your goal is  to benefit a lot. While the name and address is important in a mailing list, characteristics of a customer is important also. Start your list by making groups of the types of customers your want to target. Gather level of income, household size, age, geographic location, how often the customer makes purchases, and when do they buy. You will better appeal to the customer’s needs if you know more about them and they wll like be a repeat customer.
