A pharmacy tech has many duties though the main pharmacy technician duties include providing health care products and medication to patients. You will work directly under the licensed pharmacists and will work with doctors offices and others when dealing with insurance and other state programs.

Many times the pharmacy tech will take care of the routine jobs such as preparing the medication, doctor calls, orders, management, returns and more. A tech does not provide any information about the use of the medication as this is the pharmacists job.

To be a pharmacy technician you will need a certification form the Institute of Certification of Pharmacy technicians. Many associates support this certificate such as the National Association of chain Drug Stores. There are many training programs available from schools, hospitals and colleges though many times a drug store will provide the course along with the job training.

The vast majority of techs are in retail pharmacies while a smaller amount works in hospitals and other such positions. The actual pharmacy tech duties will depend on where you are working. Most usual duties include data entry, answer calls, stocking shelve, handling money and support those with higher responsibility. Those that work in hospitals will need to be able to decipher patients charts.

Some other duties include record keeping, taking down the correct information, inventory and counting pills to fill the prescriptions. Technicians are important to keep the pharmacy organized as there is too much customer service and booking keeping for the pharmacist to handle on their own.

The average pharmacy technician wages will vary depending on where you work though most will provide full benefits. Though very small drug stores may not offer such standard benefits. There is always a need for technicians though there is not much chance of advancement.
