02 Feb 2010 05:13 AM BusinessMost people, with the exception of the independently wealthy, rely on their jobs for their income. For many job seekers, while any employment is better than none, the search centers around not just any job but on top jobs. Most job seekers want to find the a job that will engage their creativity, utilize their skills to the maximum benefit, and also provide a generous benefits and compensation package. Unfortunately, many people who accept a job believe that it is a top job, but come to find out that it might not truly be that. What are some things to look for in order to find a great job? What would set a great job apart from an average job?
The first thing for the job seeker to consider is what makes a job great for him or her. What are the particular skills that he or she excels in, and would like to utilize on a daily basis? By the answer to these questions, and other like it, and finding positions and careers that match the skills he or she would like to use, a job seeker can make a list of her or her own personal top jobs. Once this list is established, it’s time to find out some other information about the jobs.
Obviously, the big question regarding most jobs is pay. Those who are looking for top jobs are usually looking for top pay. In order to know whether a potential job is within this range, conduct some research on pay ranges, specific to the field, the position, the area, and the education and skill levels required. Beyond the salary, there are other important components of a compensation package that must be considered for top jobs. A company retirement plan with a generous matching contribution is important. Most great jobs offer a fair amount of time off, and health insurance (along with other forms of insurance) is also a very important feature. Beyond those benefits, great jobs often offer other perks such as profit sharing, company cars, cellular phone allowances, tuition reimbursement, on-site child care, adoption assistance, a “working well” program to encourage health and wellness, and other such perks. A package that includes these components can set a job apart and make it truly extraordinary.
