Long Tail and Short Tail Keywords
29 Mar 2010 03:08 PM BusinessOnce you’ve decided which keywords you are going to use, write a list of them down on notepad. The next step involves more detailed research. Input these keywords back into your keyword research tool to get more targeted keywords. This time you should get back a list of what they call “long tail” keywords, which are more related to your actual product or service. A short tail keyword is much more difficult to rank than a long tail keyword. Just imagine if “weight loss” was your short tail keyword. The amount of competition up against you is astounding, which makes it that much harder for you to get ranked.
However, choosing a long tail keyword like “weight loss using natural herbal supplements” means you’ll rank in a heartbeat because there’s not going to be a lot of competing websites. By using a keyword research tool, you’ll get many such long tail keywords that Google Keyword Tool wouldn’t be able to find for you.
Generic keywords have more competition. It is a fact of internet marketing that multi-word phrases are always easier to rank in search engines. So think out of the box and don’t worry a lot on how to get ranked for some difficult keywords. Instead, focus on getting search engine traffic that the others are missing out on, since many people are fixed on getting the top positions for generic keywords.
All in all, keyword research is highly important if you want to succeed with your SEO or zoekmachine optimalisatie efforts. If your keywords are too broad or simply wrong, you can really suffer the loss of time. So make sure you invest in a good keyword research tool that will help you expand your keyword list and also break into new, unknown niches that are just ready to be conquered.
