For most businesses it is essential to find an accountant that is reputable, trustworthy and knowledgeable.  An accountant helps a business in many aspects including but not limited to bookkeeping, financial reporting, budgeting and preparation of tax returns.  A business should always have accurate financial records and as such, it is important to find an accountant that will know your business and over the years establish a working relationship with you.

To find an accountant, a good source is word of mouth.  If a colleague of yours is / has been satisfied with his accountant over the years, it is very likely that you will be too.  Other good sources are the yellow pages in the phone book, the Internet, and banks.  If you have a good relationship with a banker, ask him/her to refer you to a good accountant.  Banks work hand in hand with accountants on a regular basis and as such are extremely familiar with the various accountants and will easily be able to help you find an accountant that will work with your business.

When applying for a loan or renewing a loan at a bank, your loan officer will often contact your accountant directly for financial statements, tax returns and questions he/she may have.  The accountant will assist your banker by answering these questions and proving information needed, ensuring your loan application is processed in a more timely fashion.

Your accountant will also prepare and submit your company’s tax returns.  To avoid a potentially costly audit by the IRS it is necessary to ensure that your company’s records are accurate.  In this regard, an accountant is vital.

Once you  have received recommendations for accountants, pick the top three and set up a meeting.  Sit down face to face with these accountants and get a feel for them.  The accountant will work for you, so as with any job interview, it is important to pick the right one.  Determine which accountant you feel you would best work with and could develop a working relationship with.  Location will also likely be a factor.  Oftentimes if an accountant is located near your establishment, this will prove to be very beneficial and will allow you to avoid having to travel long distances to the accountant’s office to deliver your company’s records, meetings, etc.
